DWG Guide

How to Download and Use Archibite DWG Products

Archibite DWG resources are designed to make architectural drafting faster and easier. Whether you're adding people to a floor plan, incorporating vegetation into a site plan, or enhancing elevations with vehicles and other contextual elements, our resources help you create clear, engaging drawings without having to draw every element from scratch.

Each product contains a collection of DWG files intended for specific architectural workflows. Follow this guide to download your files and start using them in your projects.

1. Download your files

After completing your purchase, Shopify's Digital Downloads system provides access to your downloadable files.

  1. Open the download link provided after your purchase or in your order confirmation email.

  2. Download the ZIP file to your computer.

  3. Locate the downloaded ZIP file in your Downloads folder.

  4. Extract or unzip the file to access the included DWG files and any accompanying documentation.

Tip: Keep your extracted files in a dedicated folder so you can easily find and reuse your assets across different projects.

2. Understand the included DWG files

DWG is a widely used drawing format for computer-aided design (CAD). Depending on the product, your download may contain blocks, silhouettes, symbols, or other drawing elements for architectural documentation.

The exact contents vary by product, so check the individual product description to see what is included.

People and entourage

People and entourage assets help communicate scale and activity in architectural drawings.

Typical uses include:

  • Floor plans and furniture layouts.

  • Building elevations and sections.

  • Architectural diagrams and presentations.

  • Site plans and public-space studies.

Vegetation and landscaping

Vegetation assets help illustrate outdoor spaces and landscape design.

Use them in:

  • Site plans and landscape layouts.

  • Floor plans and roof plans.

  • Building elevations and sections.

  • Contextual diagrams and presentations.

Vehicles and transport

Vehicle assets help communicate circulation, access, and the relationship between buildings and their surroundings.

Typical applications include:

  • Site and parking plans.

  • Access and circulation diagrams.

  • Building elevations and sections.

  • Architectural presentations.

Other DWG resources

Some products may include other architectural blocks, symbols, or drawing elements. Their intended use depends on the individual collection and the way the files have been prepared.

Always check the product description for the specific contents and intended applications.

3. Open the DWG files

Most Archibite DWG products can be opened in compatible CAD software.

  1. Extract the ZIP file to a folder on your computer.

  2. Open your preferred CAD application.

  3. Open the DWG file you want to use, or open your existing project drawing.

  4. Review the drawing and identify the assets or blocks you want to use.

You can also insert DWG files into an existing drawing using your software's Insert command or equivalent workflow.

Tip: If a product contains several DWG files, open them individually to see which drawing best suits your project.

4. Insert assets into your drawing

The exact workflow depends on whether your product contains individual drawings, reusable blocks, or collections of drawing elements.

Option A — Insert a DWG as a block

If the DWG contains an asset or collection you want to reuse, you can generally insert it into your current drawing.

  1. Open your target drawing.

  2. Use the Insert command or the equivalent block insertion tool in your CAD software.

  3. Browse to the extracted DWG file.

  4. Choose the insertion point, scale, and rotation as needed.

  5. Confirm the insertion and position the asset in your drawing.

If the inserted drawing contains multiple elements, you may need to edit or explode the resulting block to work with individual components, depending on your workflow and software.

Option B — Copy and paste elements

If you prefer to work with individual elements:

  1. Open the DWG containing the assets.

  2. Select the elements you need.

  3. Copy them to the clipboard.

  4. Switch to your target drawing and paste them into place.

  5. Adjust their position, scale, and rotation as required.

Where possible, use a suitable base point or coordinate-aware copy method to make placement more predictable.

5. Check scale, units, and layers

When inserting assets into an existing drawing, it's important to check that they display correctly.

Drawing units: Confirm that the source and target drawings use compatible units. Differences between millimetres, centimetres, metres, or inches can cause inserted assets to appear at the wrong size.

Scale: Check the size of the inserted asset against a known dimension. Adjust the scale if necessary.

Layers: Review the layers included in the DWG. You may want to change their visibility, colour, or lineweight to match your drawing standards.

Lineweights and linetypes: Some assets may appear differently depending on your current layer settings, plot style, and display configuration.

Visual appearance: Check that the assets remain clear and legible at your intended drawing scale, particularly in printed plans, elevations, and sections.

6. Troubleshooting

I can't open the ZIP file.

Make sure the download has completed, then extract the archive using your computer's built-in utility or a ZIP extraction application.

The DWG file won't open.

Confirm that you're using software that supports DWG files. If the file appears damaged or cannot be opened in compatible software, contact us for assistance.

The asset appears too large or too small.

Check the drawing units in both the source and target drawings. Differences in units are a common reason for unexpected scaling.

The inserted asset has unexpected colours or lineweights.

Check the object's layer assignments, layer properties, colour settings, and plot styles. These settings can affect how the asset appears on screen and in print.

The drawing contains more elements than I need.

Some DWG products include multiple assets in one drawing. You can select and copy only the elements you need, or use the appropriate editing tools in your CAD software.
